Description

A postmodern silkscreen in colors with photolithography on paper titled "Watermark" by American pop artist Robert Rauschenberg. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right, with a 25/250 annotation, and dated 1973. Published by Brooke Alexander Inc., New York. Printed by Styria Studio, New York. The 34/250 example of this artwork is in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. The composition showcases fragmented images brought together to create a unique visual interpretation; this includes a crowd of people, car tires, a horse race, and an open book featuring Botticelli's "Primavera." A spontaneous yet methodical display of cultural identifiers  found within memories and current society. From a private collection. Dimensions: 40"h x 29"w 1.5"d (framed). In excellent condition.

Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was an American painter and graphic artist whose early works anticipated the Pop art movement. Rauschenberg is well known for his Combines (1954-1964), a group of artworks which incorporated everyday objects as art materials and which blurred the distinctions between painting and sculpture. Rauschenberg was both a painter and a sculptor, but he also worked with photography, printmaking, papermaking and performance. Rauschenberg received numerous awards during his nearly 60-year artistic career. Among the most prominent were the International Grand Prize in Painting at the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964 and the National Medal of Arts in 1993. Rauschenberg lived and worked in New York City and on Captiva Island, Florida, until his death on May 12, 2008.
