A lovely impressionist portrait graphite drawing on paper titled âMadame de Galéaâ by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Hand signed âRâ on the bottom left. Created circa 1900s. On the verso it is inscribed âStudy for Painting. Exhibition at Detroit Institute of Arts.â Renoir painted several portraits of Madame Madeleine de Galéa, and Renoirâs 1915 painting is almost identical to the composition of this sketch (see photo for reference). Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau. A rare opportunity to own an original drawing from one of the most well-known Impressionist artists. Provenance: From an estate outside of Detroit, MI. Inherited painting from family, who were the original owners, was in the familyâs procession since the mid-20th century. This drawing does not have supplementary authentication paperwork. An accredited appraiser reviewed the drawing and considered it to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity, which is reflected in the reserve pricing.
